Software Engineer: Keystone Project (Machine-Verified LLM Inference)

Mission The Keystone project, an ARIA-funded collaboration between EPFL and Imperial College London, aims to build a formally-verified ML inference engine, demonstrating that AI can help make verified systems competitive with unverified systems in terms of development effort, features, and performance. Its missions include the design and implementation of verified inference components, the formalization of GPU kernel semantics, the development of AI-assisted proof engineering workflows, and the open-source release of specifications, proofs, and verified artefacts. We seek an excellent…

Frequently asked questions

What is a research software engineer?+

A research software engineer (RSE) develops software for research purposes — building tools, pipelines, simulations and platforms that enable scientific work. RSE is increasingly recognised as a career path distinct from both academia and industry software engineering, with dedicated positions at universities and research centres.

How do academic IT salaries compare to industry?+

Academic IT/software positions typically pay less than equivalent industry roles, but they offer advantages: interesting problems, flexible hours, job security (many are permanent), conference travel, and the ability to publish. In Switzerland and Germany, the gap is narrower than in other countries.
