Tenure-track is a time-limited appointment (typically 5–6 years) that leads to a permanent professorship upon successful evaluation. The Habilitation is a traditional German-speaking qualification involving a second major research work beyond the PhD. Many European universities now offer tenure-track as an alternative, though the Habilitation remains valued in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Professor salaries vary enormously across Europe. In Switzerland, full professors earn CHF 150,000–250,000+. In Germany, W3 professors earn €70,000–100,000+ depending on the state and negotiated supplements. In Southern Europe, salaries are lower (€40,000–70,000) but so is the cost of living.
