ETH Zurich · Institute for Building Materials (IfB)

PhD

Doctoral Position in contact mechanics of architected interfaces

At the Professorship of Solid Mechanics (SMEC) in the Institute for Building Materials at ETH Zurich, we aim to understand how materials deform, degrade, break, and ultimately fail. Our research is driven by curiosity about the physical mechanisms that underlie failure and by the ambition to translate this understanding into more reliable and resilient materials and structures. By combining numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, and theoretical analyses, we seek to link microscopic processes with the macroscopic behavior of both engineering and natural systems and develop predictive…

ETH Zurich · Institute for Quantum Electronics, D-PHYS

PhD

Doctoral Position in neutral-atom quantum computing

The newly established, led by Prof. Konrad Viebahn, at the Institute for Quantum Electronics within the Physics Department (D-PHYS), ETH Zurich, is seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Candidate. Our research focusses on ultracold neutral atoms and their application in quantum technologies, in particular, quantum computing. We are currently establishing a new laboratory for laser cooling, trapping, and imaging ultracold rubidium atoms in optical lattices. With newly developed methods, such as high-fidelity collisional atom-atom interactions, we build highly coherent quantum machines capable of…

Frequently asked questions

What is the typical PhD salary in Switzerland?+

PhD students in Switzerland are employed researchers, typically earning CHF 47,000–50,000 per year at ETH/EPFL and cantonal universities. Salaries vary slightly by canton and institution but are among the highest in the world for doctoral researchers.

Do I need to speak German to work in academia in Switzerland?+

English is the working language in most STEM departments at Swiss universities. German, French or Italian may be expected for teaching or administrative roles depending on the linguistic region. ETH Zurich and EPFL operate largely in English.

How do work permits work for academic researchers in Switzerland?+

Universities routinely sponsor work permits for international researchers. EU/EFTA citizens benefit from free movement. Non-EU nationals typically receive an L (short-term) or B (residence) permit, with processing handled by the employing institution.
