Postdoctoral Researcher: Biologically Inspired Motion Systems for Robotics

Research & development - Leuven | More than two weeks ago Current actuator technologies face significant limitations in applications where compactness, softness, silent operation, and biological compatibility are essential. Conventional electromagnetic motors are often bulky, rigid, noisy, difficult to miniaturize and require power converter for portable settings. As robotics rapidly evolves, new opportunities emerge for leveraging imec’s unique technology portfolio in advanced cleanroom processes, micro-scale actuators, microfluidics and energy storage systems. To accelerate our ambitions in…

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical postdoc contract in Europe?+

Postdoctoral contracts in Europe typically last 1–3 years, often with the possibility of one renewal. Some countries limit the total duration of fixed-term academic contracts (e.g., Germany's WissZeitVG limits pre-tenure fixed-term employment to 6 years post-PhD), which indirectly affects how long one can hold postdoc positions.

What is expected of a postdoc?+

Postdocs are expected to conduct independent research, publish in high-impact journals, present at international conferences, and increasingly to apply for independent grants. Many postdocs also co-supervise PhD students and contribute to teaching, though the balance varies by institution and position.

Can I do a postdoc in a different field than my PhD?+

Yes, interdisciplinary moves are increasingly valued. Many postdoc positions explicitly welcome candidates from adjacent fields. The key is demonstrating transferable skills and explaining how your background complements the new research direction.
