The Robotic Materials group is looking for a highly motivated postdoc for the topic of . This position is funded by our The introduction of fiber optics in the 1970s has revolutionized the telecommunications industry upon the replacement of copper wires and played a major role in the advent of the Information Age - One high bandwidth fiber optic cable can replace thousands of electrical links to transmit the same amount of information. As a parallel to the thriving fields of soft devices and robots controlled by electrical signals, soft optics is emerging as a new platform that uses the modulation of light in soft matter to encode multifunctionalities in the optical path. The focus of this project is to expand both actuation and sensing capacities with light. The project will create an artificial sensorimotor network with densely distributed actuators and sensors similar to the biological neuromasculature. The first part of the project will develop a single soft optical fiber with distributed multimodal actuators that are also self-sensing. The second part will study grouped behavior of these “muscle bundles” to enable muscle coordination for complex/adaptive/efficient movements. Mission Despite recent technological advances both in the data management and in computer architecture domains, our ability to analyze data still falls behind the unstoppable data collection rates. Data-intensive applications are increasingly more demanding in sophisticated algorithms to store, manage, and interpret data. To meet the challenges, database software needs to communicate efficiently both with the application layer and with the underlying hardware platforms, and deliver seamless computational and data management support. Research in the DIAS lab addresses both aspects of the challenge: we adapt data management technology to computer architecture trends by designing data manipulation techniques that exploit optimally the underlying hardware and I/O devices, and we enable new discoveries in scientific domains through automating physical database design and revolutionizing exploration algorithms in very large data repositories. The DIAS lab pioneers just-in-time query engines which support analytics on raw data, data cleaning and query optimization for heterogeneous distributed data, and hardware/software codesigned engines for demanding applications. Main duties and responsibilities Work closely with all members of the lab carrying out excellent research Supervise students and collaborate with other postdocs (optional) Contribute to teaching (especially if interested in an academic career) Profile Highly motivated with proven scientific excellence in the areas of vector query processing, serverless/just-in-time query execution, parallel and distributed data management, and data management systems on emerging hardware Passionate about inventing, building, and publishing quality database systems research A strong publication record and hands-on experience in system development are especially important We offer The DIAS Lab team is renowned for its collaborative and nourishing culture, which supports the lab’s members since their first day in the team and…

Postdoctoral Researcher in Human Stress, Motivation and Translational Biomarkers
EPFL · Post-doc / Collab. scientifique
Mission Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)-funded project on human motivation, stress physiology, immersive behavioral testing, and biological phenotyping. The Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics at EPFL, led by Prof. Carmen Sandi, is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher with a strong technical and quantitative profile to join a SNSF-funded project investigating human motivation and stress responsiveness. The project will develop and validate individually calibrated behavioral tasks in immersive virtual reality (VR) to quantify effort-based motivation, vigor, persistence, and goal-directed versus habitual control. It will then test how acute stress alters these processes, combining behavioral performance, physiological monitoring, movement-based phenotyping, and advanced statistical and computational analyses. This position is part of a broader two-position recruitment linked to the same SNSF-funded project. The present call is for the position focused on human experimental implementation, participant recruitment, psychobiological assessment, biological sampling, and translational biomarker integration. A complementary position will focus more specifically on multimodal sensing, experimental systems, physiological and movement data, and advanced behavioral data analysis. The position is funded for three years. In line with standard EPFL procedures, the contract is issued on a one-year basis and renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress and institutional regulations. Project background Understanding how stress influences motivated behavior requires experimental approaches that combine rigorous behavioral testing with careful assessment of individual differences and biological stress responses. In this project, participants will complete immersive behavioral tasks designed to measure how they choose, initiate action, sustain effort, adapt to changing contingencies, and respond to acute stress.
