Postdoc positions in Netherlands

Postdoctoral contracts in Europe typically last 1–3 years, often with the possibility of one renewal. Some countries limit the total duration of fixed-term academic contracts (e.g., Germany's WissZeitVG limits pre-tenure fixed-term employment to 6 years post-PhD), which indirectly affects how long one can hold postdoc positions.

Postdocs are expected to conduct independent research, publish in high-impact journals, present at international conferences, and increasingly to apply for independent grants. Many postdocs also co-supervise PhD students and contribute to teaching, though the balance varies by institution and position.

The 30% ruling is a Dutch tax benefit for international knowledge workers, including academic researchers. It allows employers to pay 30% of the salary tax-free as a reimbursement for extraterritorial costs, effectively reducing the tax burden for up to five years.

CAO NU (Collectieve Arbeidsovereenkomst Nederlandse Universiteiten) is the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities. Postdocs typically fall in scale 10–11 (€3,200–4,500 gross/month), while PhD candidates follow a separate four-year salary progression from roughly €2,770 to €3,540.
